Marbles are beautiful tiny stones of clay, steel, plastic, glass, or agate that are collected for nostalgia and their attractive appearances. In earlier times, children used to play marble runs and various other games with these.

It’s a fun game of skills and precision

The Australian’s kiss and kill

In Australia, the marbles were “fired”, which means that the players had to flick their gorgeous marbles with their hands that had to be kept stationary. Hands weren’t allowed to be in front of the marble resting on the ground. The players had to use their thumbs or knuckles to fire every time. Only the first marble that marked the bunny hole for starting the game could be thrown as per the desire of the players.

Once a player succeeds in landing their marble in the hole, immediately they have to fire their marbles at the opponent. However, if any player accidentally hits another’s marble before their own, the act is termed as “a kiss”. The game would be over, and the players would have to restart the game. This needs a lot of patience because not everyone would be fine with restarting a game after making it close to the finishing line.

The aim is to hit the marble in the hole thrice and then run away before the final shot is to be played, termed “the kill”.

Cara: a long Indian line of marbles

India has many games to be played with marbles. One of the most common and simple ones is called “Cara”. A marble is put in a long line of marbles at equal distances of approximately one centimeter. Then, a player has to throw the marble perpendicularly as far as they can from the lined ones. The player whose marble goes the farthest gets the chance to hit the marble’s line first. The player who manages to shoot and displace the marble from the line wins that marble and all those at its right side. The distance at which players have thrown their marbles determines their position to play.

Dig a tiny pit for the dool!

Ugandans dig a small pit in the ground and play the game of marbles which they call “dool”. The starting is marked by drawing a line on the ground with chalk or a stick that is one meter or so away from the pit. The players roll their marbles towards the pit. The players whose marble lands in the pit get points equal to one game. If another one falls, the points increase to that of the other player. And if none of the marbles fall, then the marble that is closest to the pit starts firing. A player can only fire 24 shots, consecutively turn-wise. If the gap between marbles lessens, the other players can make a call and the player’s score gets deducted.
